Newport Named Great American Beach Town

Concierge.com has named Newport, Rhode Island one of eleven Great American Beach Towns calling it the new Northeast Classic.  While I’m happy to report that Newport was named to the list, I find it a little puzzling at the same time.  Ask any Rhode Islander what Newport is known for and you’re likely to get an answer along the lines of sailing, Thames St, and the mansions.  I’d be willing to bet that the word beach isn’t going to be the first one out of any natives mouth.  This is because when Rhode Islanders talk about going to the beach, they are usually heading to Narragansett and maybe Westerly, which is a little further away from the population center of the state.  With such a classic beach town only 45 minutes away, one would think that more people who actually live in the state would take advantage of the resource.

Could we be unaware of a gem lurking right under our noses, or could the spector of finding parking and navagating the indirect route to Newport be the reason why we prefer to head down to the shrinking Scarborough every summer?

If you’re interested, here’s the slide show.

  2. well I went to Newport Beach a lot while I lived in RI, and I still go once a year every summer with friends and family. We love the restaurants, the vineyard and the little stupid shops that sell things you cant find anywhere else…for example my picnic basket which was featured on a TV show and made only for the Newport Vineyard. ;) It’s definitely a special beach…I wish more residents frequented
